Bates Leads Women's Indoor Track at Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Naomi Bates '14 (Washington, D.C.) won the 60-meter dash, while placing second in the 60m hurdles and third in the triple jump to lead the women's indoor track & field team at the Wesleyan Invitational III.

Bates opened her afternoon with a first-place finish in the 60m dash, clocking in with a time of 8.00. First-year Abraelle Shirley (Hawthorne, Calif.) also impressed in the event, coming in seventh (8.35). Bates later put forth a second-place showing in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.45 before taking third in the triple jump (10.35m). 

The sophomore also teamed up with Lauren Almeida '13 (Reading, Mass.), Keri Lambert '13 (Amherst, Mass.) and Melissa Sullivan '12 (Dallas, Texas) in Amherst's fifth-place 4x400 relay.

Sullivan and Almeida led a strong Jeff showing in the 800-meter run, placing first (2:22.90) and third (2.25.95), respectively, while first-year Lizzy Briskin (Sherborn, Mass.) and Marlis Gnirke '15 (Wellesley, Mass.) finished seventh and eighth.

Lambert gave Amherst another win, taking the 1000m run with a time of 3:00.92, while Amy Dao '14 (Boxborough, Mass.), Lisa Walker '14 (Superior, Colo.) and Eliza Schalch '12 (Bethesda, Md.) came in sixth, seventh and 10th, respectively. Dao, Walker and Schalch would also partner with Itai Brand-Thomas '15 (San Francisco, Calif.) on the Jeffs' second-place distance medley relay team (13:17.84).

Senior Ellen Richmond (Concord, N.H.) also recorded a second-place finish in the 600-meter run, clocking in at 1:44.39, while Jaya Tripathi '14 (Newtown, Mass.) placed ninth. First-year Jessie Kaliski (Wellesley, Mass.) and Abby Hopper '13 (Brooklyn, N.Y.) came in second and third in the 3000m run, while Kelli Ellingson '15 (Boise, Idaho) and Kristen Moulton '13 (North Reading, Mass.) finished seventh and eighth in the mile run.

Senior distance runner Shannon McKenna also put forth a top-10 effort, finishing ninth in the 5000-meter run with a time of 20:17.26.

Amherst returns to action on Jan. 27 at the Boston Indoor Games.
