NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Amherst College indoor track and field teams won eight events during Saturday's Smith College Winter Classic, as the Lord Jeffs competed in a non-scoring meet against six teams from the region.
Naomi Bates '14 led the way by winning the 60- and 200-meter dashes, as well as the long jump. Senior Ellen Richmond had the fastest time in the 800-meter run, while Lisa Walker '14 came out on top in the mile.
Rounding out Amherst's winners on the women's side was Abby Hopper '13, who bested the field in the 3,000-meter run. Earning runner-up finishes for the Lord Jeffs were Jessica Mueller '13 and newcomer Molly Levy, who placed second in the high jump and the 200-meter dash, respectively.
The Amherst men added two victories for the Purple and White, with first-year Mark Cort posting the best mark in the triple jump and Selasie Krampa '13 winning the 200-meter dash. The Lord Jeffs would end up taking the top four places in the 200, as Krampa was followed by Cort, Persie Gijima '14 and Steven Hetterich '15.
The Jeffs also had three of the top eight times in the 60-meter dash, with Krampa leading the way by placing fourth. Cort and Matt Melton '14 were the runners-up in the 400 and 600, respectively, while senior Chris Erickson and first-year Alex Durkee were third in the 800 and 1,000. Melton and Durkee also teamed up with Nick Codola '15 and senior Peter Skurman to take second place in the 4x400 relay.
