Amherst Opens Indoor Season Well at Smith Winter Classic

NORTHAMPTON, MA – The Amherst College men's and women's indoor track and field teams opened the 2010-11 season this afternoon competing at the Smith College Winter Classic. With a handful of competitors still not competing after cross country season, the Lord Jeffs posted impressive results on both the men's and women's side.

The event was not scored in a team format, but Amherst posted a handful of top-five results.  Both Amherst's 4x400-meter relay teams performed well, with the men's side winning in 3:32.52, and the women's relay finishing second in 4:21.72. Also winning an event was Amherst sophomore Jade McKnight (Pasadena, CA), taking the women's 400-meter dash in a time of 1:05.04. 

Amherst's throwers fared well at Smith, with junior Jordan Roehl (Portales, NM) finishing top-four in both the women's weight throw and the shot put. Roehl placed fourth in the weight with a toss of 11.60-meters, and third in the shot with a 10.85. On the men's side, Chris Eaton (Brooklyn, NY) finished fourth in the weight throw with a 15.39-meter hurl. 

For the jumpers, Naomi Bates (Washington DC) performed well in her collegiate debut. The rookie finished fourth in the long jump with a 5.07-meter jump, before placing second in the triple with a jump of 10.91 meters. 

In the men's 55-meter dash, Amherst sophomore Thomas Matthew (Boulder, CO) finished second in a 6.79, while Bates placed second in the women's 200-meter dash. Bates turned in a 27.71 for the runner-up in the 200. 

Susan Wasserman (Brooklyn, NY), Zoe Pagonis (Westminster, MD) and Jaya Tripathi (Newton, MA) went 3-4-5 in the women's 1,000-meter run, while Amherst's Tommy Moore (Marlborough, MA), Matt Melton (Wall, NJ) and Ryan Drost (New Milford, CT) went 4-5-6 in the men's 600-meter run. 

Both Amherst teams will return to action after the winter break, competing next at Brandeis on January 15, 2011.
