Three Jeffs Compete on Day Two of NCAA Championships

BEREA, OH – Three members of the Amherst College men's and women's outdoor track and field teams competed on day two of the NCAA Division III Championships at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. The Lord Jeffs will wrap up their season Saturday afternoon when three runners take part in the 1,500-meter run.

Running first for Amherst on Friday was Ben Scheetz '12 (Lancaster, PA), who qualified for the 400-meter dash by posting a 48.14 at the Oneonta State May Meet. Competing in the second of three trial heats today, Scheetz finished sixth in his group and 16th overall with a time of 49.23 seconds, as he fell shy of qualifying for Saturday's finals.

Next up on Friday was Mary Doris Reggie '10 (Crowley, LA), who brought an impressive career to a close by placing fifth in her heat and 10th overall in the 800-meter run, with her time of 2:12.23 leaving her just outside of the qualifying ranks for Saturday's finals. Reggie saw an improvement from her time of 2:12.44 at last week's Oneonta State May Meet, which provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Championships.

Also wrapping up an outstanding career and rounding out Friday's Lord Jeff competitors was Sophia Galleher '10 (Denver, CO). Galleher was attempting to become the second runner in Amherst history to win a national title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, but her time of 10:58.85 landed her in 13th place among the field of 18.

Amherst will wrap up the 2010 NCAA Championships on Saturday, with Melissa Sullivan '12 kicking things off for the Lord Jeffs when she competes in the 1,500-meter run at 1:20 p.m. Will Yochum '11 and Steve Corsello '11 will follow with the men's 1500 at 1:30 p.m. Results will be posted immediately after the conclusion of each event on the Amherst Championship Website.
