Jeffs Wrap up Competition at Open New England Championships

DEDHAM, MA – The Amherst College men's and women's track and field teams traveled to the campus of Northeastern University this weekend to compete in the 2010 New England Open Championships against competitors from the NCAA's Divisions I, II and III. A handful of Lord Jeff athletes performed well enough to earn provisional status for the upcoming Division III NCAA Championships.

In the men's 400-meter dash, Amherst's Ben Scheetz (Lancaster, PA) qualified in 8th place during the preliminary rounds with a time of 48.96. The time was good enough to earn provisional status for the Lord Jeff runner.  Scheetz rose into 5th place in the final, running a 48.46 to lower his provisional time. Teammate Steven Corsello (Skaneateles, NY) had a strong performance in the men's 800-meter run, placing 2nd with a 1:52.69. His time was fast enough to land him on the podium, but could not earn him a qualifying status.

In the men's 5,000-meter run, Will Yochum (Goleta, CA) finished behind a pair of runners from UMass-Lowell for a 3rd place result. Yochum's time of 14:43.68 was an impressive showing for the distance runner.

On the women's side, Amherst senior Mary Doris Reggie (Crowley, LA) finished in 9th place in the 800-meter run, laying down a time of 2:13.83 to fall just short of earning team points. Classmate Sophia Galleher (Denver, CO) was able to earn the Jeffs points in the 3,000-meter steeplechase though, finishing in 2nd place with a time of 10:58.84.

With the strong showing by a handful of Lord Jeffs, the Amherst men were able to place 19th of 39 teams, while the women's squad finished 21st of 39 teams.
