NORTHAMPTON, MA - The Amherst College men's and women's indoor track and field teams each turned in a stellar performance this afternoon at the 2010 Smith Tartan Invitational. The Lord Jeff women finished in first place out of 15 teams, while the men's team placed second among 13 schools.
In the men's competition, Amherst was started off by a second-place performance from Kevin Hanley (Manhattan Beach, CA) in the 5000-meter run, and a podium sweep in the mile run. Will Yochum (Goleta, GA) turned in a 4:13.79 in the mile for a provisional NCAA qualifying time to win, while Daniel Murner (Crestwood, KY) and Andrew Erskine (Stamford, CT) placed second and third with times of 4:17.75 and 4:30.69, respectively.
As the day went on, Amherst took spots four-six in the 400-meter dash, and placed a pair on the podium in the 600-meter. Placing fourth in the 400 was Andrew Reed (Riverside, CT), followed by Tommy Moore (Marlborough, MA) and Andrew Gary (Exeter, NH) fifth and sixth, respectively. Kit Callahan (Evanston, IL) won the 600 with a 1:25.32, while teammate Ryan Drost (New Milford, CT) placed third in the event with a 1:27.19.
Steven Corsello (Skaneateles, NY) won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.76 to qualify for New England's. Yochum and Jimmy Swanson (New Orleans, LA) finished in the top three in 1000-meter run, while Carlyle Eubank (Santa Ynez, CA) and Travis Cohoon (Rolling Hills Estates, CA) finished first and third, respectively, in the 3000-meter event.
On the women's side, Amherst performed well in the mile run, with first-years Ali Simeone (Stoneham, MA) and Lauren Almeida (Reading, MA) placing second and third, respectively, and classmate Sarah Daly (Wheaton, IL) finishing in sixth place. Senior Mary Doris Reggie (Crowley, LA) won the 600-meter run, edging out Susan Wasserman (Brooklyn, NY) in second place. Reggie won the event with a 1:39.60, to beat Wasserman by just .53 seconds.
In the following event, rookie Keri Lambert (Amherst, MA) won the 800-meter run, while sophomore Eliza Schalch (Bethesda, MD) finished in third. Sophomore standout Melissa Sullivan (Dallas, TX) won the 1000-meter event, with a tro of teammates placing sixth, seventh, and eighth. The Lord Jeff women won the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:08.60, before the 4x800 relay team won their race with a 9:50.28. First-year Jade McKnight (Pasadena, CA) ran an impressive 7.74 to place fourth in the 55-meter dash.
