Lord Jeffs Open Indoor Season at Smith Winter Classic

NORTHAMPTON, MA – The Amherst College men's and women's indoor track and field teams opened the 2009-10 season Saturday morning at the Smith College Winter Classic. Several members of the Lord Jeff squads put in strong performances during the non-scoring meet. 

Leading the men's team was sophomore Ben Scheetz (Lancaster, PA), who won the 800-meter run and 1-mile run by edging teammate Adron Pitmon (Underhill, VT) in each event. After completing the 800 in 1:58.65, Scheetz finished only 0.05 seconds ahead of Pitmon with a 4:28.83 in the mile. 

Also putting in a strong performance for Amherst was junior Thebe Tsatsimpe (Johannesburg, South Africa), who won the 200-meter dash Heat 4 (23.13) and the 400-meter dash (52.84). Sophomore Spencer Russell (West Chesterfield, NH) placed second behind Tsatsimpe in the 200, also finishing as the runner-up in the 55-meter hurdles (8.20). Tsatsimpe wrapped up his day by placing sixth in the high jump at 1.76 meters. 

Rounding out Amherst's individual winners was senior Larry Thompson (Atlanta, GA), who edged classmate Keith Pendergrass (Greenwich, NY) in the 200-meter dash Heat 2 with a time of 25.08. Making a solid debut for the Lord Jeffs was first-year Ofori Amponsah (Cleveland, OH), who placed third in the 55-meter dash (6.74) and second in the 200-meter dash Heat 3 (24.46). 

Standing out on the women's side was first-year Jade McKnight (Pasadena, CA), who won the third heat of the 400-meter dash (1:01.89) and the 200-meter dash (27.82), also running the final leg of Amherst's winning 4x400-meter relay team. Joining McKnight in the 4x400 were Hoiwan Cheung (Hanover, NH), Mary Doris Reggie (Crowley, LA) and Zoe Pagonis (Westminster, MD), as the Lord Jeffs ran a 4:17.74. 

Reggie also won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:26.38, while Cheung and Pagonis were the top two finishers in the 1000. First-year Jessica Mueller (East Freetown, MA) won the second heat of the 200-meter dash and placed fourth in the triple jump, while senior Caroline Darmody (Coral Gables, FL) was the runner-up in the 400-meter dash Heat 1. 

Sophomore Jordan Roehl (Portales, NM) and junior Chibuzo Uwakaneme (Irvington, NJ) performed well for Amherst in the throwing events. Roehl was the runner-up in the first flight of the weight throw (12.96m), with Uwakaneme placing second in the second flight (10.60m). Similar results came in the shot put, with Roehl and Uwakaneme placing second in the first and third flights, respectively. 

The Lord Jeffs will return to action Saturday, Jan. 16 when they travel to Brandeis University for the Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational.
