BOSTON, MA – Select members of the Amherst College men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed in the 2009 Open New England Championships this past Friday and Saturday at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center. Competing against schools from Divisions I, II and III, the Lord Jeff men placed 25th in a field of 33 teams and the women placed 20th in a field of 32.
Senior Elise Tropiano (Plainview, NY), who was recently named the USTFCCCA Division III Scholar Athlete of the Year, continued her dominating season by winning the 3,000-meter run. After posting a winning time of 10:03.32 at last weekend's DIII New England Championships, Tropiano ran a 9:52.58 on Saturday to edge Emma Perron of Providence by nearly five seconds. Tropiano's win gave the Jeffs their lone points of the weekend.
Joining Tropiano in the 3k were junior Sophia Galleher (Denver, CO), sophomore Hallie Schwab (Stone Ridge, NY) and first-year Shannon McKenna (Cedar Falls, IA), who placed ninth (10:23.19), 12th (10:25.34) and 22nd (10:36.70), respectively. Rounding out the distance runners was senior Zandra Walton (Skaneateles, NY), who finished 22nd in the 1-mile run with a time of 5:15.91.
Amherst's 4x400 relay team placed 14th (4:01.28) and consisted of senior Kate Silverman (Montclair, NJ), sophomore Susan Wasserman (Brooklyn, NY), junior Mary Doris Reggie (Crowley, LA) and senior Carly Levenson (Richmond, VA). The 4x800 relay team of senior Molly Priedeman (Wayzata, MN), first-year Melissa Sullivan (Dallas, TX), first-year Eliza Schalch (Bethesda, MD) and junior Hoiwan Cheung (Hanover, MA) finished 11th at 9:29.56.
The University of Connecticut led the women's teams with 186.50 points. Fellow NESCAC schools Tufts and Williams placed 11th and 17th, respectively, while Amherst finished ahead of Bates, Bowdoin, Colby and Middlebury.
Junior Daniel Murner (Crestwood, KY) earned all of Amherst's points by placing third in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:47.95 after he finished 20th in the 3k at last weekend's DIII Championships. Senior Peter Foote (Shelburne, VT) and sophomore Will Yochum (Goleta, CA) saw success in the 3k on Saturday by placing ninth (8:35.09) and 12th (8:43.71), respectively. In the 1-mile run, junior Jimmy Swanson (New Orleans, LA) placed 21st with a time of 4:17.88.
The 4x400 relay team of sophomore Andre Gary (Exeter, NH), senior Anthony Fuller (Millbury, MA), senior Steve Stewart (Hartford, CT) and sophomore Tommy Moore (Marlborough, MA) ran a time of 3:26.22 to place 22nd. The junior quartet of Jimmy Swanson (New Orleans, LA), William Bell (Silver Spring, MD), Tommy Anderson (Birmingham, AL) and Kit Callahan (Evanston, IL) placed 12th in the 4x800 relay with a time of 7:53.83.
The University of Connecticut completed the sweep by winning the men's meet with 128.50 points, while Williams and Trinity colleges placed ninth and 19th, respectively. Amherst finished ahead of Tufts, Wesleyan and Bates.
The Lord Jeffs return to action Friday, Mar. 6, when the ECAC Championships begin at Tufts University.
