Amherst Runners Excel at Season-Opening Wesleyan Invitational

MIDDLETOWN, CT - The Amherst men and women's indoor track teams posted exceptional individual efforts at the season-opening Wesleyan University Invitational. First-year Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) and sophomore Ariel Haney (Fairport, NY) were both double winners on the women's side, while the men posted 1-2-3-4 finishes in both the 1,500-meter run and the 3,000-meter run. 

Garrahan had an outstanding performance, leading a 1-2 finish in the 1,000-meter run and a 1-2-3 finish in the 1,500-meter run. Senior tri-captain Alyson Venti (Newton, MA) took second and third, respectively, while junior Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) placed second in the 1,500 and went on to win the 3,000-meter run. Haney claimed victory in the 400-meter dash and the high jump, and she also ran on the first-place 4x400-meter relay team with classmates Julia Rucker (Minneapolis, MN) and Lyndsey Scott (West Orange, NJ) and junior tri-captain Monica Westin (Lexington, KY). Rucker also won the long jump, while Westin took second place in the 500-meter run. 

Junior Dave Molina (Cleveland, OH) led the way in the 1,500 followed by senior John Stanton-Geddes (Glendale, MO), junior Jack Morgan (Las Vegas, NV) and senior tri-captain Andrew Schneider (Saratoga Springs, NY). In the 3,000, sophomore Dave Schreiner (Manhattan Beach, CA) earned the win ahead of first-years Cooper Knowlton (Montclair, NJ), Richard Wilson (Columbus, OH) and Nathaniel Freese (Tunbridge, VT). Morgan earned first-place in the 800-meter run, while Schneider and Molina took fourth and fifth places, respectively. Senior Paul Whiting (Mission Viejo, CA) posted a win in the triple jump, followed closely by first-year Jon Ettinger (Chevy Chase, MD), and also earned a sixth-place finish in the 55-meter dash. Junior Mike Page (Fargo, ND) and sophomore Evan Guiney (Cooperstown, NY) nabbed another 1-2 finish in the 5,000-meter run. Also earning second-place finishes were senior tri-captain Janak Chandrasoma (Pasadena, CA) in the 400-meter dash, and first-year John Babbott (Ojai, CA) in the 1,000-meter run. 

On Saturday, the men and women's teams will travel to Tufts University for the Tufts Invitational.
