First-Year Phenom Hamill To Run At NCAA Championships

March 6, 2002

AMHERST, MA - First-year Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) will travel to Ohio Northern University in Oxford, OH to represent the Amherst women's indoor track team at the NCAA Championship Meet. Hamill will run in the 5,000-meter race on Friday, after shattering previous school records in the 1,500-meter, 3,000-meter, and 5,000-meter events during her inagural indoor track season. This winter, Hamill also combined with junior Kate Hamill (New York, NY), senior tri-captain Anne Perez (Chappaqua, NY), and recent NESCAC All-Academic selection senior Rebecca Woo (Manchester, NH) to set a school record in the 4x800-meter relay.

The rookie also turned heads at the Open New England Championships at Tufts University on February 23rd, when she became the first Jeff woman to win an Open New England Championship, taking first place in the 3,000-meter race. Hamill is no stranger to recognition, gathering together a fall cross-country season that granted her and Amherst junior Martha Nelson (Bethesda, MD) All-American honors, while leading the squad to a seventh-place finish at the NCAA National Championship in November.

Several Jeffs narrowly missed a trip to Ohio and the NCAA Championship. Sophomore John Stanton-Geddes (Glendale, MO), also a NESCAC All-Academic Team honoree, missed the mark by 0.3 seconds in the 1,500-meter event, and junior Laurel Kilgour (Clifton Park, NY) came up short by 0.3 seconds in the 800-meter run. The women's Distance Medley Relay squad ended five teams away from the qualifying mark in the standings.

Hamill's race is scheduled to kick off at 7:05 p.m. on Friday night. Full results will be posted at after 8:00 p.m. that night. The race's top six finishers will be given All-American honors.
