Indoor Track Teams Post Strong Showings at Smith

February 9, 2002

NORTHAMPTON, MA - The Amherst College men's and women's indoor track teams made their marks at the Smith College Invitational on Saturday, posting several quality times. The individual events gave several Jeffs the opportunity for stellar performances, including postseason-qualifying times and new personal records.

For the women, first-year Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) annihilated the school record she set in the 500-meter run by 20 seconds. Hamill's 17:15 time qualified her for the NCAA Championship Meet. Meanwhile, first-year Alison Rodriguez (Albany, NY) scraped past the New England Division III qualifying time in the 1000-meter run at 3:16.31, right on the heels of senior Diana Rancourt (Lunenberg, MA) and junior Laurel Kilgour (Clifton Park, NY). Senior tri-captain Amie Shei (Lexington, MA) brought home her first collegiate victory in the 600-meter run in a scorching 1:40.36, and classmate Cecily Brewer (West Lafayette, IN) etched a 10:52.99 personal record in the grueling 3000-meter run. First-year Lee-Jay Henry (Springfield, MA) had a well-rounded day, almost winning the 55-meter run in 7.66 seconds after turning in solid scores in the triple jump and long jump.

The men used the day to their advantage as well. Sophomore John Stanton-Geddes (Glendale, MO) won the 1500-meter run easily. His 3:58.27, a new personal record, was just three-tenths of a second off of the NCAA Championship provisional qualifying mark. Stanton-Geddes racked up another personal record with a 1:58.73 finish in the 800-meter run later in the day. Sophomore Janak Chandrasoma (Pasadena, CA) won the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter run, before leading off the second-place 4x400-meter relay team. The Amherst trio of first-year Jack Morgan (Las Vegas, NV), senior tri-captain Jacob Cooper (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY), and Doug Norton (West Newton, MA) grabbed first, second and third places, respectively, in the 600-meter run, and first-year David Molina (Cleveland, OH) won the 1000-meter run in 2:34.72, lowering his personal record in the process. Senior Rusty Ryan (Marblehead, MA) rounded out the day with a 9:11.19 personal record-setting, second-place showing in the 3000-meter run.

The Jeffs will head into the postseason on Saturday with the women competing at the Division III New England Championships at the University of Southern Maine. The men, meanwhile, will travel to Bates College for their half of the Division III New England Championships.
