Amherst Women's Indoor Track Wins Brandeis Invitational; Men Third

January 19, 2002

WALTHAM, MA - In its second meet of the season on Saturday, the Amherst College women's indoor track team scored 91 points to win the Brandeis Collegiate Invitational by a lopsided margin. Second-place Wesleyan University's 65 points fell 26 shy of the champion Jeffs. Meanwhile, Amherst's men finished third behind Bowdoin College and Stonehill.

Amherst's women place first individually in different events: junior Laurel Kilgour (Clifton Park, NY) in the 800-meter run; first-year Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) in the 3000-meter; and both the 4x400 and 4x800-meter relay teams. Junior Kate Hamill (New York, NY) placed second in the 600-meter run, while senior co-captain Anne Perez (Chappaqua, NY) followed suit in the 800-meter; senior Rebecca Woo (Manchester, NH) took fifth place in the 400-meter, while fellow seniors Emily Lobsenz (Fairfield, CT), a co-captain, and Cecily Brewer (West Lafayette, IN) nabbed third and fourth place, respectively, in the 5000-meter run. The Jeffs also had a strong showing in women's field competition, with first-year Lee-Jay Henry (Springfield, MA) and junior Alison Stahl (Amston, CT) placing second and eleventh, respectively, in the long jump, and Henry and first-year Alison Rodriguez (Albany, NY) finishing fourth and fourteenth, respectively, in the triple jump.

In men's action, sophomore Janak Chandrasoma (Pasadena, CA) and junior Brian Hart (Rutland, VT) grabbed sixth and seventh places in the 400-meter run. Chandrasoma also took fourth place at 200 meters, pacing first-year Jay Wagstaff (Tewksbury, MA) and his sixteenth place finish. First-year Doug Norton (W. Newton, MA) and senior Jacob Cooper (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) teamed up to claim fifth and sixth places in the 600-meter run, before senior Ben Kozyak (Coral Gables, FL) and first-year Jamaal Aaron (Brooklyn, NY) finished tenth and eleventh in the 800. First-year David Molina (Cleveland, OH) took fifth place in the 1000-meter run, while sophomore John Stanton-Geddes (Glendale, MO) placed third in the 3000 and first-year Zeke Phillips claimed seventh in the 5000. The Amherst 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams, meanwhile, both powered to second place finishes.

The sophomore duo of Paul Whiting (Mission Viejo, CA) and Julius Nanna (Cobham, England) struck twice shortly thereafter, bringing in seventh and 19th places for Amherst in the long jump, and third and fourth in the triple jump. First-year Julian Gibson (Palo Alto, CA) grabbed second place in the shot put, before first-year Matthew Birmingham (West Nyack, NY) ended the day with a 16th place showing in the weight throw.

Both the men and the women's squads will be back in action at Wesleyan University this weekend, January 26.
