Indoor Track Opens Season With Strong Showing at Tufts Holiday Classic

December 10, 2001

MEDFORD, MA - The Amherst College indoor track team tested itself against stiff competition in the season-opening Tufts University Holiday Classic on Saturday. The Jeffs placed well nonetheless, with several Amherst representatives posting strong finishes in their early-season events.

Senior tri-captain Amie Shei (Lexington, MA) ran to a fourth-place finish in the 600-meter run, while senior tri-captain Annie Perez (Chappaqua, NY) grabbed sixth place at 800 meters, followed by senior Noelle Noyes (Oneida, NY) in ninth. The 1000-meter run saw a second-place time by junior Laurel Kilgour (Clifton Park, NY), and Perez followed suit with a fourth place finish in the 1500-meter run. Sophomore Helen Dole (Shelburne Falls, MA) trailed Perez in the 1000-meter run, finishing in eighth place.

From there, the Amherst women notched a fifth place finish in the 4x400 meter relay before Dole finished 11th and first-year Alison Rodriguez (Albany, NY) placed 14th in the triple jump.

On the men's action, sophomores Janak Chandrasoma (Pasadena, CA) and Eric Osborne (Memphis, TN) took home sixth and eighth places in the 200-meter run, sandwiching Williams College runner Val von Arnim. Chandrasoma took second place at 400 meters, pacing first-year Nathaniel Mahlberg (Madison, WI) and his eighth place finish.

First-years Doug Norton (W. Newton, MA) and Ed McCabe (Yonkers, NY) teamed up to claim seventh and eighth places in the 600-meter run, before classmate Jamaal Aaron (Brooklyn, NY) ran to a third-place finish in the 800. First-year David Molina (Cleveland, OH) took fifth place in the 1000-meter run, accompanying sophomore John Stanton-Geddes (Glendale, MO) and his sixth-place showing. Stanton-Geddes found his groove again in the 1500, driving to a third-place finish ahead of ninth-place first-year Jack Morgan (Las Vegas, NV). The Amherst 4x400 relay team, meanwhile, powered to a second place finish.

Sophomores Paul Whiting (Mission Viejo, CA) and Julius Nanna (Cobham, England) brought in 13th and 14th places for Amherst in the long jump, and Whiting struck again, locking up fourth place in the triple jump ahead of Nanna's sixth place finish. First-year Julian Gibson (Palo Alto, CA) grabbed seventh place in the shot put, before first-year Matthew Birmingham (West Nyack, NY) ended the day with a 19th place showing in the weight throw.

Both the men and the women's squads will lace up at Brandeis University on Jan. 10, following the winter break.
