MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Amherst women's tennis senior Camille Smukler '20 swept both of her opponents in straight sets while Maggie Owensby '22 and Anya Ramras '22 clipped their opponents to end day two with three Mammoths still in the hunt at the 2019 ITA New England Regional Championship Saturday afternoon.
Smukler, a 2019 ITA All-American, held her opponent (Caitlyn Ferrante) to one point, winning 6-0, 6-1 before battling Wesleyan's Kristina Yu to a 7-5, 6-3 decision in the quarterfinals.
Smukler is matched up against Serim Jin of Wesleyan in tomorrow's semifinals with the winner advancing to the championship to face the winner of Katie Fleischman (Wesleyan) and Sarah Pertsemlidis (MIT).
Owensby and Ramras fought hard in both of their matches, slipping by Mathilda Rigby and Maddie Suk by an 8-7 (9) margin before facing Middlebury's Katherin Hughes and Skylar Schossberger. The tandems went back and forth with the Mammoths prevailing with an 8-7 (4) triumph to advance to day three.
The duo will take on Venia Yeung and Ferrante in the semifinals with the winner advancing to face Kristina Yu / Sophie Henderson or Heather Boehm / Maddi Stow.
Smukler and Anya Ivenistky '20 grabbed an opening win against Williams (8-4) before Ferrante and Yeung thwarted the Mammoths, 8-5, in quarterfinals action.
Semifinals action will commence for singles and doubles promptly at 9:00 AM tomorrow morning (September 29th).
