MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Amherst women's tennis opened the weekend competition with Camille Smukler '20 and Maggie Owensby '22 advancing to the round of 16 while three Mammoth pairings will also battle on day two at the 2019 ITA Division III Women's New England Regional Tennis Championship.
No. 4 seeded Camille Smukler '20 matched up against Bates' Suzanne Elfman, winning in straight sets (6-0, 6-2) before taking on Middlebury's Brinlea La Barge and clinching a spot in the round of 16 after clinching a 6-3 triumph in both sets.
The last Mammoth still fighting in the singles draw, Maggie Owensby '22, also faced off against the host school when taking on Katherine Hughes in her opening match and winning 7-6 (6), 6-3. Owensby cruised past Colby's Callie Nesbitt by a score of 7-5, 6-2 to move into day two action.
In doubles, Amherst saw three Mammoth pairings advance out of the first round. The tandem of Jackie Bukzin '22 and Maddie Dewire '20 downed Kennedi Carter and Tasha Christ 8-6 and will face Bates tomorrow.
Smukler paired up with Anya Ivenitsky '20 and made short work of Alexis Amy and Caitlin Goldberg, winning 8-2 while Owensby and Anya Ramras '22 thwarted Diana Dehterevich and Lauren Bertschn 8-6 to advance.
Owensby will take on MIT's Sarah Pertsemlidis tomorrow while Smukler lines up against Caitlyn Ferrante. Round two action will commence tomorrow with the winners of the singles and doubles competing on day three.
