Amherst Women’s Tennis Advances to Second Consecutive NCAA Quarterfinals

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The No. 6 ranked Amherst women's tennis team made it out of their region and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2019 NCAA DIII Championship for the second consecutive season after blanking Johns Hopkins, 5-0, in third round action at the University Indoor Tennis Center Sunday afternoon. 

For the second consecutive match and the fourth time this season, the Mammoths have held their opponents from scoring. Amherst swept the doubles competition, limiting their opponents to two points in each match.  

The tandem of Maddie Dewire '20 and Anya Ramras '22 notched the first point for the Mammoths when they claimed an 8-2 victory over Evelyn Chang and Katie Gauch at number three. Kelsey Chen '19 and Jackie Bukzin '22 repeated the same score line after posting the second win on the day at number one against Anjie Kashyap and Sophia Strickland.

Juniors Camille Smukler '20 and Anya Ivenitsky '20 rounded out the doubles sweep with another 8-2 decision at number two over Blue Jays Dhanya Asokumar and Kimberly Zou. Rolling into singles play, Smukler added another point for the Purple & White at number two after blanking Strickland in the opening set 6-0, before stealing the second set by a 6-3 margin.

At number five, Claire Evans '22 capped of the day and solidified the Mammoths advancement to the championship site with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Asokumar. Amherst will battle NESCAC foe, Middlebury, in their quarterfinals match up on May 20th in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
