Amherst Women’s Tennis Snags 6-3 Triumph over Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – For the second time this season, the Amherst women's tennis team took down New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foe Williams by a 6-3 margin Saturday afternoon at the Lansing Chapman Rink in a Play for Pride match.

Prior to the matches beginning, both sides took a moment to show their support for athletes and coaches of all sexual orientations. Williams wore rainbow shoelaces throughout the course of the day while Amherst wore rainbow ribbons.

Maggie Owensby '22 highlighted the Mammoths performance after securing a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Julia Pham at number five, continuing her undefeated record in singles action.

The day opened with doubles play where the Purple & White jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after sweeping all three matches. Jackie Bukzin '22 and Kelsey Chen '19 got things started with an 8-3 win over Leah Bush and Pham before Camille Smukler '20 and Anya Ivenitsky '20 posted the same score line against Korina Neveux and Emily Zheng (8-3). Up 2-0, Maddie Dewire '20 and Owensby secured the sweep with an 8-5 decision at the third spot.

In the first singles match, Smukler closed out an imposing 6-2, 6-2 win over Henderson at number two before the Ephs were able to get on the board with a 6-3, 6-2 win at the top of the ladder when Bush thwarted Bukzin. Neveux was able to steal Williams' second win on the day after dropping 6-4 to Dewire in their opening set but coming back to post 6-3, 6-2 victories in the remaining two .

The Ephs brought it back to within one as Ivenitsky battled Zheng at number four, coming up short after clinching the opening set but dropping the final two (6-3, 2-6, 3-6). However, Owensby claimed the Mammoths 10th win on the season after her dominating performance over Pham before Claire Evans '22 rounded out the day with a 6-2, 6-3 win at number six over Ng.

Amherst takes the court again tomorrow, April 21st, when the Purple & White travel to Wesleyan (Conn.) to face the Cardinals in more conference action at 3:00 PM. Williams will host Bowdoin in their next competition on April 27th at 10:00 AM.
