WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Amherst's Women's Tennis team conclude their first day of the ITA New England Regional Championship as they continue into day two with Mammoths still in the running for the singles and doubles draw.
In the singles bracket, Mammoth Claire Evans '22 did not lose a set as she faced off against Catherine Peabody of Mount Holyoke College in the first round, winning 6-0, 6-1. She then went on to take down Keren Khromchenko of Brandeis with a mark of 6-4, 6-2. Anya Ramras '22 matched Evans by not giving up a set through her first two matches, beating her opponents 6-1, 6-3 and then 6-1, 6-0. Ninth seeded Jackie Bukzin '22 is the last Mammoth in the singles draw race as she took down Emma Gorman of Middlebury College before beating Megan Guenther 6-1, 6-0.
Camilla Trapness '19 opened up strong as she swept Trinity's Marta Drausnik 6-0, 6-0 before losing to ninth seeded Venia Yeung of Wesleyan 7-6(3), 6-2.
May Zhu '22 and Margaret Owensby '22 both fell short in their first round as Zhu lost to Lara Rakocevic of MIT 6-4, 6-2 and Owensby dropped to sixth seeded Christina Puccinelli of Middlebury College.
The pairing of Bukzin and Evans are the only Mammoths still in the running for the doubles draw as they took down Michele Lehat and Keren Khromchenko of Brandeis 8-4 to secure their spot in day two's competition. They are set to go up against Justine Huang and Michaela Markwart of Wellesley College.
Trapness and Zhu dropped in the first round as they lost to Tufts by a mark of 8-2. The duo of Owensby and Ramras also saw an early exit to Tufts as they were taken out by Mina Karamercan and Maggie Dorr 8-4.
