AMHERST, Mass. -- Playing late into the night at Bay Road Tennis Center, Amherst College defeated #11 MIT 5-2 on Friday, handing the Engineers just their second loss of the year.
Amherst improves to 10-7 on the season, and will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday afternoon when they host Middlebury at 1:00 pm in the final regular season match of the year.
The #8 ranked Mammoths took a 2-1 lead after doubles, with wins at #1 and #3. In a sign of things to come, Avery Wagman '18 and Anya Ivenitsky '20 edged out Elysa Kohrs and Libby Rickerman 9-8 (7-4) in the first of several close matches.
The tight play continued into singles, where Smukler took three sets to beat Kohrs at #1 singles (6-1, 1-6, 6-3) and Tzeng scored a point for MIT with a 6-4, 6-7 (2), 12-10 win at #4.
The Mammoths got victories in straight sets from Kelsey Chen '19 (6-3, 6-3), who beat Zhu at #3, and Ip, who topped Rickerman 6-4, 7-5.
Wagman and Dewire also led their matches one set to none though the #5 and #6 spots went unfinished.
MIT looks to bounce back in time for next Tuesday's NEWMAC Seminifnals, where they will be the host institution.
