No. 8 Amherst Toppled by Fifth-Ranked Wesleyan, 7-2

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Taking to the courts against Little III rival and fifth-ranked Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon, the No. 8 Amherst College women's tennis team fell to the Cardinals, 7-2 at the John Wood Memorial Tennis Courts. 

With the setback, Amherst falls to 8-7 on the year and to 3-3 in league play, while Wesleyan improves to 9-1 overall (5-1 NESCAC). Amherst returns to the court tomorrow, Sunday, April 22 when they travel to Hamilton for an 11 a.m. matchup.

The Mammoths suffered three tough losses in doubles action, with Avery Wagman '18 and Anya Ivenitsky '20 falling, 8-0 on the first court and Jane Fraley '19 and Vickie Ip '18 and Camille Smukler '20 and Maddie Dewire '20 suffering 8-4 losses in the second and third position, respectively.

In singles play, Ivenitsky got Amherst on the board with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Alissa Nakamoto in the No. 5 spot, while Wagman added the Mammoths second and final win after battling past Helen Klass-Warch, 6-3, 6-1 on the sixth court.
