Mammoths Edged by Jumbos in NESCAC Women's Tennis

MEDFORD, Mass. -- Amherst College led 2-1 after doubles play, but #6 Tufts University came surging back and slipped past the #8 Mammoths 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon inside Gantcher Center.

Amherst falls to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play.

Jane Fraley '19 and Vickie Ip '18 earned a point at second doubles for the Mammoths, topping Patricia Obeid and Lauren Louks 9-8 (8-6).

Camille Smukler '20 and Maddie Dewire '20 added to the lead with an 8-4 win at third doubles, but the Jumbos earned a point through a #1 doubles win by Otilia Popa and Mina Karamercan (9-7).

Karamercan and Louks responded with victories at the top two singles spots for Tufts, with Louks holding off Ip in a three-set thriller (4-6, 6-3, 6-4).

Anya Ivenitsky '20 held off Zoe Miller in three sets that looked very similar to the Ip vs Louks match (6-4, 3-6, 6-4). Camilla Trapness '19 was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at sixth singles as well, but Tomo Iwasaki and Kat Wiley were both straight set victors for Tufts to deliver the one-point win.

The Mammoths look to bounce back this Saturday when they travel to Wesleyan for a 10:00 AM match and on Sunday at Hamilton (11 AM).

Tufts (10-4, 5-2 NESCAC) plays host to Williams on Saturday, April 28th at 9 AM before travelling to Bowdoin on Sunday the 29th.
