No. 11 Women's Tennis Upsets No. 9 Carnegie Mellon, 7-2

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Mammoths picked up their second consecutive victory in their Spring Break trip out west, as the No. 11 Amherst College women's tennis team used five singles wins to upset No. 9 Carnegie Mellon, 7-2 Wednesday afternoon at the Claremont Country Club.

With the win, Amherst improves to 2-2 on the season, while the Tartans fall to 12-3 overall. Amherst returns to the courts tomorrow, Thursday, March 15 when they face off against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps beginning at 2 p.m.

The Mammoths clinched wins on the first and second courts in doubles action to own a 2-1 edge heading into singles play.

In the No. 1 spot, Avery Wagman '18 and Anya Ivenitsky '20 powered past Cori Sidell and Courtney Ollis, 8-1, while the duo of Vickie Ip '18 and Kelsey Chen '19 battled to a hard fought 9-8 (7-1) win in the second position over Vinaya Rao and Melissa Strome. 

In singles competition, Amherst claimed wins on all but the fourth court to secure the 7-2 upset win.

At the top of the ladder, Camille Smukler '20 defeated Sidell in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, while Ip and Chen added 7-5, 6-2 and 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victories, respectively, in the second and third spot. On the fifth court, Ivenitsky edged Strome, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2), while Wagman capped of the match win by beating Hannah Rosenfield, 6-4, 6-0 in the sixth slot.
