CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Amherst College women's tennis swept their doubles matches and then clinched a 6-1 victory in Tuesday afternoon's match against Trinity (Texas) for their first victory of the season.
The first two double matches went Amherst's way by an 8-2 score. Avery Wagman '18 and Anya Ivenitsky '20 topped Zoe Kaffen and Mary Kaffen at #1 doubles, while Kelsey Chen '19 and Vickie Ip '18 beat out Caroline Kutach and Cheyenne Duncan at #2.
Smukler, Ip and Wagman were all straight set winners at singles, with Smukler topping Kutach 6-3, 6-1 at the top of the lineup and Ip handling De Leon 6-2, 6-1 at #2.
Wagman was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Kaffen at fourth singles, while the #5 and #6 matches went unfinished with the match in hand for the Mammoths.
The lone point for the Tigers came at third singles, where Ivenitsky took the first set 6-2 but saw Ashley DeBauge come back for a 6-3 second set win and a 10-5 match-clinching tiebreak.
Up next for the Mammoths (1-2) is a 4:00 PM match against Carnegie Mellon on Wednesday in California.
