Amherst Edged by No. 6 Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Amherst College took two of three doubles matches, but came up just short in singles, falling to No. 6 Pomona-Pitzer on Monday afternoon.

Avery Wagman and Anya Ivenitsky won 8-3 at first doubles, and Maddie Dewire and Camille Smukler won 8-5 at the three spot, as the Mammoths (0-2) held a 2-1 lead going into singles play.

The Sagehens took four of the six singles positions, however to improve to 4-1 on the season. Smukler was able to top Caroline Casper 6-5, 7-6 (2) at first singles and Wagman was a three-set winner at six singles, but the middle of the lineup saw Pomona-Pitzer take straight set wins at #2, #4 and #5.

Kelsey Chen took the first set off of Summer Garrison at third singles, but Garrison fought back for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Maryann Zhao beat Vickie Ip 6-2, 6-3 at second singles to seal the match for the Sagehens at 5-2, despite the fact that Smukler and Wagman would finish their matches with wins for Amherst.

Tomorrow afternoon, Amherst will hit the courts in Claremont again when they face Trinity (Texas) at 12:00 PM.
