HADLEY, Mass. – First-year Camille Smukler and sophomore Kelsey Chen of the Amherst College women's tennis team have been named to the 2017 All-NESCAC Second Team, as recently announced by the league office.
Smukler was named NESCAC Rookie of the Year in addition to earning Second Team All-Conference in both doubles and singles, while Chen garnered a Second Team nod for her doubles play.
Six doubles and six singles selections are named on both the First and Second Team, with six of this year's 18 total honorees having secured both singles and doubles praise.
The fourth Amherst women's tennis student-athlete to be named the NESCAC Rookie of the Year, Smukler joins Rachel Holt (2002), Kristen Raverta (2003) and Jordan Brewer (2011) as a winner of the notable accolade. Playing at the top of the ladder in both singles and doubles for the Mammoths, Smukler's Second Team nods come after the Villanova, Pa. posted a 9-8 singles record and a 8-9 doubles mark. Memorable singles wins for Smukler include a 6-4, 7-6 (3-0) victory against William's Linda Shin in the ITA Regional Championships and a 7-5, 6-4 win over Mina Karamercan of Tufts in the NESCAC Quarterfinals.
Chen earns her first all-league accolade after consistently producing strong play in doubles competition. Exclusively playing on the first court for the Mammoths this spring, the San Diego, Calif. owns a 7-7 overall record, including an impressive 5-3 mark against perennially tough NESCAC opponents.
As doubles partners against NESCAC competition, Chen and Smukler boast clutch wins over Joulia Likhanskaia and Samantha Stalder of Bowdoin, 8-3 and against Hannah Atkinson and Chloe Henderson of Williams, 8-5.
Amherst returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, May 13 when they open the 2017 NCAA Championship tournament with a 12:30 p.m. matchup against the winner of Elizabethtown and Skidmore in Middlebury, Vt.
