No. 12 Women's Tennis Suffers Hard Fought Loss to No. 8 Tufts, 5-4

MEDFORD, Mass. – Doubles competition proved to be the difference maker, as the No. 12 Amherst College women's tennis team fell to No. 8 Tufts University, 5-4 Wednesday afternoon at the Gantcher Center.

With the loss, Amherst moves to 5-6 overall and to 3-2 in NESCAC play, while Tufts improves to 11-3 on the season (4-1 NESCAC). Amherst next hits the courts on Saturday, April 22 when they host Little III rival Wesleyan beginning at 1 p.m. 

DOUBLES ACTION

  • Tufts took a 2-1 advantage in doubles competition, with the Mammoths lone win on doubles play coming on the second court.
  • In the No. 2 spot, the tandem of Avery Wagman '18 and Anya Ivenitsky '20 bested Katherine Wiley and Otilia Popa, 8-2. 

SINGLES PLAY

  • Camille Smukler '20 battled to a three-set win against Mina Karamercan, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the top spot on the ladder, while Ivenitsky remained perfect on the day with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 victory over Tomo Iwasaki on the third court.
  • Megan Adamo '17 secured what stood as the Mammoths final win on the day in the fifth position, fighting past Alexa Meltzer, 6-2, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
