Women's Tennis Falls to Williams, 8-1

AMHERST, Mass. – Taking on archrival Williams College in their lone dual meet of the fall season, the Amherst College women's tennis team fell, 8-1 Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Tennis Courts at UMass-Amherst.

Junior Vickie Ip logged the Purple & White's lone victory of the day, defeating Juli Raventos in three sets in first court singles play, 5-7, 6-4, 10-8.

In the second position, Camille Smukler '20 dropped a two-set contest to Linda Shin, 6-4, 6-0, while Giulia McDonnell Nieto del Rio downed Avery Wagman '18, 6-2, 6-2 in No. 3 singles.

Jackie Calla '17 and Camilla Trapness '19 both suffered a tough three-set losses on the fourth and fifth court, respectively, with Calla falling to Leah Bush 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 and Trapness being downed by Hannah Atkinson, 4-6, 6-3, 10-5.

On the sixth court, Mia Gancayco clinched a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Jen Chen '20.

Amherst dropped all three doubles matches with Wagman and Calla being edged by Raventos and Shin, 8-2 on the first court. On court two Atkinson and Chloe Henderson defeated Ip and Anya Ivenitsky '20, 9-8 (7-5) in a tightly contested matchup, while Chen and Smukler fell to the duo of Gancayco and McDonnell, 8-2.

Amherst returns to action, Firday-Sunday, Oct. 14-18 when they compete in the NEWITT Championships at Smith College and Mount Holyoke College.
