MASON, Ohio – Amherst College women's tennis players Sue Ghosh '16 and Vickie Ip '18 competed in singles and doubles action of the 2015 NCAA Division III Individual Championships Thursday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
Thursday's action featured the singles rounds of 32 and 16, and the doubles round of 16. The quarterfinals and semifinals of singles play, and the doubles quarterfinals will take place on Friday. The singles final, and the doubles semifinals and final will take place on Saturday.
In the round of 32, Ghosh, playing as an alternate, fell behind, 6-2 to Washington's (Mo.) Rebecca Ho, before rallying in the second and third sets (6-4, 6-2) to earn a 2-1 victory in the match.
With the win, Ghosh advanced to Thursday's round of 16 and took on Katie Kousman of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Ghosh cruised to a 6-4, 6-2 win over Kousman to set up a quarterfinal tilt with Bowdoin's Joulia Likhanskaia on Friday at 9 a.m.
Ip was eliminated from singles championship action when she fell, 2-1 to Linfield's Ella Riddle in the round of 32. Ip fell behind, 6-1 in the first set, but battled Riddle to a 7-5 win in the second frame. Riddle then posted a 6-4 win in the decisive third set to complete the win.
In the round of 16 doubles play, Ghosh and Ip picked up a 7-5 win in set one, before Carnegie Mellon's Bryn Raschke and Cori Sidell narrowly evened the match with a 7-6 victory in the second frame. Ip and Ghosh then notched a 6-4 win to complete the win for the Jeffs and advance to tomorrow's quarterfinal round. Ghosh and Ip will take on Natalie Etchegaray and Ceara Sumida of Redlands at approximately 3 p.m.
