MASON, Ohio – The seventh-ranked Amherst College women's tennis team concluded its 2014-15 campaign with a 5-1 victory over No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) in Wednesday's NCAA Division III Championship consolation match at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
With the win, Amherst finishes its successful season 17-5 overall, while CMS finishes its season, 25-3 overall. Sue Ghosh '16 and Vickie Ip '18 will remain in Mason, Ohio to compete in the individual singles and doubles championship which begins Thursday, May 21.
In doubles action, Amherst's Safi Aly '15 and Sarah Monteagudo '16 posted an 8-3 victory over Lindsay Brown and Laura Livingston on the No. 3 court, while Jacqueline Calla '17 and Maddy Sung '16 edged Sarah Kukino and Kyla Scott, 9-7 on the No. 2 court. In No. 1 doubles play, CMS's Katie Kousman and Caroline Ward narrowly defeated Vickie Ip '18 and Sue Ghosh '16, 9-8 to fend off the sweep as the Jeffs took a 2-1 lead into singles play.
The Jeffs cruised to victory in singles play as Monteagudo earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Brown on the No. 4 court, while Ghosh downed Kousman, 6-3, 6-1 on the No. 2 court. In the third position, Calla knocked off Kukino, 6-0, 7-5 to complete the victory for the Purple & White. When play finished, Ip held a 7-6, 0-3 lead over Ward on the No. 1 court, while Scott (7-5, 2-4) and Bria Smith (6-3, 5-2) led from the No. 5 and No. 6 slots respectively.
