MASON, Ohio – The seventh-ranked Amherst College women's tennis team fell to top-ranked Williams College, 5-1 Tuesday afternoon in the NCAA Division III Championship Semifinals at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
Amherst moves to 16-5 overall after advancing to its seventh consecutive national semifinals berth since 2009. Williams (24-0) will take on No. 2 Emory in the championship match Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. The Jeffs will meet Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the third place contest at 10 a.m. Following that match, Sue Ghosh '16 and Vickie Ip '18 will remain in Mason, Ohio to compete in the individual singles and doubles championship which begins Thursday, May 21.
In doubles play, Williams' Julia Cancio and Mia Gancayco bested the tandem of Ghosh and Ip, 8-3 from the No. 1 slot, while Rebecca Curran and Maya Hart defeated Safi Aly '15 and Sarah Monteagudo '16, 8-5 from the No. 3 court. Jacqueline Calla '17 and Maddy Sung '16 salvaged an 8-6 win on the No. 2 court to stave off the sweep, ousting the Ephs' combination of Juli Raventos and Linda Shin.
Raventos notched a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ip in No. 1 singles action, while Cancio topped Megan Adamo '17, 6-3, 6-3 on the No. 5 court. Hannah Atkinson posted a 6-2 in set one from the sixth position before narrowly beating Claire Carpenter '17, 7-5 in the second set to complete the 5-1 victory for Williams.
When play finished, Calla held a 6-4, 2-4 lead over Curran on the No. 3 court, while Shin led Ghosh, 6-0, 5-6 on the No. 2 court. In No. 4 singles action, Gancayco led Monteagudo, 7-6, 3-5.
