MASON, Ohio – The seventh-ranked Amherst College women's tennis team earned a 5-1 victory over No. 13 MIT Monday morning in the quarterfinal round of the 2015 NCAA Division III Championship at the Lindner Family Tennis Center hosted by Ohio Northern University and Warren County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
With the win, Amherst improves to 16-4 overall, and advances to the program's seventh consecutive national semifinals appearance since 2009. The Jeffs will take on No. 1 Williams Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. The Ephs punched their ticket to the final four following a 5-0 sweep of No. 14 DePauw in other quarterfinal action.
Amherst held a 2-1 lead after doubles action as Jacqueline Calla '17 and Maddy Sung '16 posted an 8-1 victory over Sonya Das and Michelle Dutt from the No. 2 position, while Vickie Ip '18 and Sue Ghosh '16 defeated Elysa Kohrs and Victoria Tam, 8-4 from the No.1 slot.
In singles action, Megan Adamo '17 was the first to finish for the Jeffs as she notched a 6-4, 6-4 win over the Engineers' Cindy Liu from the No. 5 position. Monteagudo picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Tzeng in No. 4 singles, before Ghosh edged Das, 6-1, 7-5 from the No. 2 position to complete the win.
Ip held a 7-5, 3-3 lead on the No. 1 court, while Calla held a 6-1, 5-3 advantage on the No. 3 court. MIT's Wendi Kong was leading, 6-4, 4-1 from the No. 6 position when the match concluded.
