Jeffs Edge Johns Hopkins, 5-4 to Advance to NCAA Quarterfinals


AMHERST, Mass. - The seventh-ranked Amherst College women's tennis team edged Johns Hopkins, 5-4 in the NCAA Division III Regional Final Sunday afternoon at the Amherst Courts. 

With the win, Amherst advances to its seventh consecutive NCAA quarterfinal and improves to 15-4 on the season. Johns Hopkins concludes its season, 18-5 overall. The Jeffs will play the winner of Washington & Lee and MIT on May 18. 

Amherst held a 2-1 edge after doubles play, earning victories at No. 1 and No. 3. The tandem of Vickie Ip '18 and Sue Ghosh '16 posted an 8-5 win over Ashnaa Rao and Shannon Herndon, while the duo of Sarah Monteagudo '16 and Safi Aly '15 defeated Jody Law and Megumi Chen, 8-1. Sydney Lehman and Elaine Baik picked up Johns Hopkins' lone win from the No. 2 position with a narrow, 8-6 triumph over Jacqueline Calla '17 and Maddy Sung '16. 

In singles action, Rao and Lehman collected wins from the top two spots (6-2, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-3) over Ip and Ghosh respectively, while Calla and Monteagudo secured wins from the No. 3 and No. 4 positions. Calla downed Amanda Austi, 6-2, 6-2, while Monteagudo posted a 7-6, 6-1 win over Law. 

Chen logged a clutch win on the No. 5 court, 6-1, 6-2 over Megan Adamo '17, while Claire Carpenter '17 helped the Purple & White secure the win with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Sunaina Vohra.
