AMHERST, Mass. – The seventh-ranked Amherst College women's tennis team cruised to a 5-0 sweep over SUNY Geneseo Saturday morning in the second round of the 2015 NCAA Division III Championships on the Amherst Courts.
With the win, the Jeffs (14-4) advance to the regional finals and will play the winner of TCNJ and Johns Hopkins. Amherst has now won at least one match in 21 straight NCAA tournament appearances. The Knights conclude their impressive season with a 15-4 record.
In doubles action, first-years Vickie Ip and Avery Wagman claimed an 8-5 win in the No. 1 position over Marylen Santos and Minxuan Yuan. Maddy Sung '16 and Jacqueline Calla '17 took No. 2 doubles, 8-1, while Safi Aly '15 and Sarah Monteagudo '16 won by a similar score in No. 3 doubles.
The Jeffs needed two wins in singles play to claim the match, and sealed the deal with wins in No. 3 and No. 5 singles. Monteagudo defeated Amanda Rosati on the No. 3 court by scores of 6-0, 6-1, and Claire Carpenter '17 swept Mai Hashimoto in the No. 5 spot.
At the top of the lineup, Ip held a 6-3 lead over Santos, and Cat Crummey of SUNY Geneseo was ahead 4-3 over Calla. Megan Adamo '17 took the first set 6-0 against Dexuan Yuan and led 2-0 in set two before the match ended, and Aly held a 6-1, 3-1 advantage over Minxuan Yuan.
