MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The third-seeded Amherst College women's tennis team held a 2-1 advantage after doubles play, but fell, 5-2 to top-seeded Williams College in Sunday's 2015 NESCAC Championship match hosted by Middlebury College at the Proctor Tennis Courts.
With the loss, Amherst moves to 13-4 on the season, while Williams improves to 20-0 and earns the NESCAC's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Championship. This is the Ephs' third NESCAC crown in the last five years.
In doubles action, Amherst earned the first victory of the day when Sarah Monteagudo '16 and Safi Aly '15 downed Rebecca Curran and Maya Hart, 8-6 on court No. 3. The Jeffs extended the lead to 2-0 when Vickie Ip '18 and Sue Ghosh '16 posted an 8-4 win on court No. 1, but the Ephs were able to stave off the sweep in the second position as Juli Raventos and Linda Shin defeated Jacqueline Calla '17 and Maddy Sung '16, 8-6.
Heading into singles play, Williams evened the score in the match when Maria Gancayco defeated Megan Adamo '17, 6-2, 6-1 on the fifth court. The Ephs then took a 3-2 lead when Julia Cancio topped Claire Carpenter '17, 6-2, 6-1 from the sixth position. Williams then took a 4-2 lead as Shin bested Calla, 6-0, 6-2 from the third slot before Raventos sealed the title for the Ephs with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Ghosh to set the final score at 5-2.
