MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The third-seeded Amherst College women's tennis team edged second-seeded Middlebury College, 5-4 Saturday afternoon at the Proctor Tennis Courts and advanced to the NESCAC Championship match.
With the win, Amherst (13-3), the reigning NESCAC champion, will play top-seeded Williams College on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Middlebury moves to 9-6 on the season.
Amherst held a 2-1 advantage following doubles action, but it was Middlebury that scored the first point of the contest as Alexandra Fields and Lauren Amos defeated Safi Aly '15 and Sarah Monteagudo '16, 8-4 on the No. 3 court. Jacqueline Calla '17 and Maddy Suny '16 posted an 8-5 win over Jennifer Sundstrom and Kaysee Orozco on the second court, while Sue Ghosh '16 and Vickie Ip '17 earned an 8-4 triumph in the first slot over Ria Gerger and Lily Bondy.
In singles action, Fields posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ghosh on the No.2 court, before Monteagudo downed Orozco, 6-3, 6-0 on the No. 4 court. Gerger defeated Ip on the first court, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 and Margo Marchese bested Megan Adamo '17 on the No. 5 court give Middlebury a 4-3 edge in the match.
Claire Carpenter '17 provided a win from the No. 6 court (6-2, 2-6, 6-4) over Katie Paradies, before Calla delivered the winner with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory from the third position to send the Purple & White to a thrilling, 5-4 win.
