Jeffs Fall Short to Williams, 5-4

AMHERST, Mass. - The Amherst College women's tennis team fell short to Williams Saturday in its 2014-15 dual-match opener, 5-4.

The Jeffs, last year's national runner-up, open the season 0-1 with the loss, while the Ephs remain unbeaten at 2-0.

The Purple & White claimed doubles action, 2-1. In the No. 1 position, Vickie Ip '18 and Sue Ghosh '16 defeated Rebecca Curran and Maria Pylypiv decisively, 8-1. In the No. 3 spot, Sarah Monteagudo '16 and Safi Aly '15 edged Hannah Atkinson and Giulia McDonnell, 9-7.

In singles play, the Jeffs claimed the top of the lineup by earning wins in the No. 1 and 2 positions from Ip and Ghosh, respectively. Ip defeated Linda Shin in a tight match by scores of 6-3, 3-6, 10-6, while Ghosh took a decisive 6-2, 6-3 match against Juli Raventos.

Simione Aisiks '17 dropped the first set from No. 3 singles but retaliated to take the second, 6-3, before falling short in the final match by a score of 6-1. The Ephs claimed wins from No. 3 singles down to No. 6 singles en route to the narrow win.

Amherst returns to action Friday, Oct. 17 for the three-day NEWITT Tournament hosted by the Jeffs.
