WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Sue Ghosh '16 and Vickie Ip '18 of the Amherst College women's tennis team highlighted the weekend for the Jeffs at the 2014 USTA/ITA New England Regional Championships, hosted by Williams College.
Gosh, the No. 8 seed in singles action, and Ip, a No. 9 seed, each advanced to quarterfinals. The duo also paired together in doubles action and reached the semifinals as the No. 5 seed.
In singles play, Ghosh claimed wins over Sojung Lee of Wellesley (6-2, 6-4), Pilar Giffenig of Bowdoin (6-2, 6-3) and Mia Gancayco of Williams (1-6, 6-4, 6-0), respectively, before falling short to the Ephs' Maria Pylypiv (6-1, 6-1).
In her first collegiate match, Ip won three singles matches. She defeated Helen Klass-Warch of Wesleyan (6-3, 6-2) to advance to the second round where she handed Tess Trinka of Bowdoin losses of 6-2, 6-4. In the third round, Ip fell short in the first set (6-2) but retaliated to take sets two and three by scores of 6-0 and 7-5, respectively. However, she fell short in the quarterfinals to Aandrita Deb of Tufts in a thriller by scores of 7-6 (9-7), 6-7 (7-9), 6-2.
Simone Aisiks '17 claimed two wins in singles play including a sweep in the first round, while Jackie Calla '17E picked up another win for Amherst.
The duo of Ghosh and Ip were paired against teammates Sarah Monteagudo '16 and Aisiks in the first round of the doubles tournament and prevailed, 8-4. They went on to win two more against Elizabeth Erbafina and Elena Mandzhukova of Bates (8-4) before defeating Julia Cancio and Juli Raventos of Williams (8-5). Advancing to the semifinals, the pair fell short against Emma Chow and Trinka of Bowdoin by a score of 8-3.
The Jeffs return to the court Sunday, Oct. 5 for the Connecticut College Tournament.
