Jeffs Advance to NESCAC Championship With 5-3 Semifinal Win Over Middlebury

AMHERST, Mass. – The top-seeded Amherst women's tennis team opened its 2014 NESCAC Championship run with a 5-3 conference semifinal victory over fourth-seeded Middlebury.

Extending its win streak to eight matches, the Jeffs improved to 17-3 (8-0 NESCAC) on the season and will face archrival Williams in tomorrow's tournament final slated for 9 a.m. The Ephs outlasted third-seeded Bowdoin in the day's other semifinal, 5-3. Falling to second-ranked Amherst for the second time this season, ITA No. 10 Middlebury dropped to 10-7 overall.

Staking the Jeffs to an early lead, Zoe Pangalos '14 and Jen Newman '14 secured an 8-3 second doubles victory over Alexandra Fields '17 and Lily Body '17. Doubling Amherst's margin, Jordan Brewer '14 and Gabby Devlin '14 dispatched of Ria Gerger '16 and Kaysee Orozco '17 at the top of the order, 8-4. Earning the Panthers' only doubles point, Lauren Amos '16 and Margot Marchese '16 edged out Safi Aly '15 and Sarah Monteagudo '16, 9-7.

Pulling Middlebury even, Bondy opened singles action with a decisive 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Sue Ghosh '16. Winning the first set of her No. 1 singles match with Gerger (6-4), Brewer put the Jeffs back on top with a 6-0 triumph in the second.

Inching the Purple & White closer to victory, Devlin downed Fields in straight sets. Taking the first frame 6-1, the senior closed out the second singles match-up with a 6-4 victory in the second. Pulling the Panthers back within one, Orozco edged Newman 7-5, 6-4 at third singles.

With Amherst clinging onto a slim margin, Monteagudo rallied from a first set loss to defeat Dorrie Paradies '14 at No. 6 singles. After opening the match with a 6-0 setback, Monteagudo battled back, taking the second frame, 6-3, before clinching the semifinal victory with a 6-4 triumph in the third. Pangalos led Marchese, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 at the time of the match's completion.
