Jeffs Split Matches Against Emory and Bates

AMHERST, Mass. – After falling to second-ranked Emory, the fourth-ranked Amherst College women's tennis team retaliated with a 9-0 sweep over NESCAC rival Bates on Saturday.

In a dual-match meet held at Bowdoin College, Amherst snapped its seven-match win streak with an 8-1 loss to Emory (17-2). However, with a 9-0 win at Bates (7-4, 2-1 NESCAC), the Jeffs improved to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the NESCAC.

Amherst returns to the court Tuesday, Apr. 15 and will host NESCAC foe Tufts beginning at 4 p.m.

NO. 2 EMORY 8, NO. 4 AMHERST 1
The Jeffs were swept in doubles play during its first dual-match of the day. The senior pairing of Gabby Devlin and Jordan Brewer dropped an 8-2 match on the No. 1 court to Gabrielle Clark '14 and Michelle Satterfield '17. Zoe Pangalos '14 and Jen Newman '14 were edged 8-6 in No. 2 doubles while Safi Aly '15 and Sarah Monteagudo '16 fell by the same score in the No. 3 spot.

Sue Ghosh '16 picked up the only Amherst win, claiming the No. 4 position in singles. She defeated Melissa Goodman '17 with back-to-back 6-1 wins. Newman was edged by Satterfield in the No. 3 spot by scores of 6-4, 7-6 (3).

NO. 4 AMHERST 9, BATES 0
Amherst answered with a solid 9-0 victory in its second match of the day at Bates. The No. 1 doubles team of Brewer and Devlin and the No. 2 doubles team of Pangalos and Newman both swept their respective courts, 8-0. Aly and Monteagudo claimed a decisive 8-1 win in the No. 3 spot.

The Jeffs cruised in singles play as well. Devlin and Newman took No. 1 and No. 2 singles by scores of 6-1 and 6-1, respectively. Ghosh picked up her second singles win of the day with a 6-3, 6-0 victory on the No. 3 court. Monteagudo took the No. 4 court, 6-3 and 6-1, and first-year's Megan Adamo and Claire Carpenter claimed wins at the bottom of the lineup. Adamo swept her opponent in the No. 5 spot and Carpenter won by scores of 6-1 and 6-2 on the No. 6 court.
