Jeffs Fend Off No. 7 Bowdoin, 6-3

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The fourth-ranked Amherst women's tennis team opened its 2014 NESCAC schedule with a hard-fought 6-3 victory over No. 7 Bowdoin.

Extending their win streak to seven matches, the Jeffs improved to 9-2 (1-0 NESCAC) on the season while the Polar Bears fell to 10-3 (3-1 NESCAC) on the year. Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Apr. 12 with matches against No. 2 Emory and conference rival Bates.

Notching the Jeffs' lone victory in doubles action, Jordan Brewer '14 and Gabby Devlin '14 dispatched of Joulia Likhanskaia '17 and Emma Lewis '14 at the top of the order, 8-3. Bowdoin's Kate Winingham '14 and Samantha Stalder '17 took down Jen Newman '14 and Zoe Pangalos '14 in the second slot, 8-3, while Pilar Giffenig '17 and Tiffany Cheng '16 ousted Safi Aly '15 and Sarah Monteagudo '16, 8-4.

Headlining Amherst's singles lineup, Brewer topped Cheng, 6-3, 6-4. Knotted at a set apiece in her second singles match-up against Winingham, Devlin secured a 6-3 decision in the third, while Likhanskaia recorded the Polar Bears' only singles win with a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Newman.

At fourth singles, Sue Ghosh '16 bested Lewis, 6-2, 6-1, while Pangalos edged out Stalder, 6-4, 6-3. Dropping just one game in her sixth singles showdown, Monteagudo turned away Emma Chow '15, 6-0, 6-1.
