ATLANTA – Gabby Devlin '14 won the decisive third set at sixth singles to break a 4-4 tie and lift the second-ranked Amherst College women's tennis team over fourth-ranked Emory University at the Fab Seven Tournament on Friday.

The top-five matchup lived up to its billing, with Amherst (3-1) taking the top two doubles matchups but Emory (6-3) winning three of the first five singles contests to be completed. With all eyes turning to the end of sixth singles, Devlin pulled out the win over Brenna Kelly, taking the third set 6-4 after she had forced the finale with a 7-6 (7-3) tiebreak win in the second.

Devlin also helped the Jeffs to a point at first doubles as she and Jordan Brewer '14 topped the Eagles' No. 1 duo of Gabrielle Clark and Annette Sullivan, 8-4. Amherst took the No. 2 contest as well, with Jen Newman '14 and Zoe Pangalos '14 besting Jordan Wylie and Madison Gordon, 8-4, but Emory grabbed a point heading into singles play as Kelly and Emma Taylor took third doubles from Caroline Richman '13 and Safi Aly '15, 8-5.

Newman had the lone easy win for Amherst in singles competition as she handled Marissa Levine at No. 2, 6-2, 6-2. Beatrice Rosen matched her for Emory, however, with a quick 6-3, 6-1 win over Richman in the third contest. In the No. 1 tilt, Clark started strong against Brewer with a 6-2 triumph, but the Jeff junior hung tough in the second set before eventually falling, 7-5.

Pangalos picked up the slack at fifth singles, however, as she took the second-set tiebreaker from Gordon for a 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) win, putting Amherst back ahead, 4-3. But Wylie evened it in dramatic fashion, coming back from a loss in the first-set tiebreak to post a tight 6-7 (2-7), 7-5, 6-4 win over Sue Ghosh '16. Meanwhile, Devlin was in the midst of her own comeback as she recovered from a 7-5 loss in the first set to post the decisive victory for Amherst.

The competition will get even stiffer for the Jeffs on Saturday as they battle top-ranked Johns Hopkins at 1 p.m. on the Emory courts.
