BOCA RATON, Fla. – The second-ranked Amherst College women's tennis team completed the first match of its Southern Spring Break trip on Wednesday night, falling to Division II's eighth-ranked squad, Lynn University (10-1) on the Fighting Knights' home courts.

After Monday's match at Barry University was canceled after doubles play due to rain, the Jeffs (2-1) picked up their lone points Wednesday at second doubles and third singles. In the evening's first contest to go final, Jen Newman '14 and Zoe Pangalos '14 proved their prowess as they took down D-II's seventh-ranked pair, Kim Przeszlowski and Andrea Berkova, 8-4. In the top doubles contest, Jordan Brewer '14 and Gabby Devlin '14 hung tough with the third-ranked duo of Val Confalonieri and Ioana Ivan, falling 8-6.

Caroline Richman '13 and Safi Aly '15 fell 8-3 at third doubles to Alina Jane and Ana Kriz, but Richman scored Amherst's other point in singles play as she outlasted Jane at No. 3, 6-3, 1-6, 6-0. At fifth singles, Aly also went to three sets but fell to Przeszlowski, 1-6, 6-3, 1-6. Both contests finished after the match was already decided, however, with Lynn sweeping the four other singles affairs. At No. 1, Confalonieri made quick work of Brewer, 6-2, 6-1, while Newman put up a stronger fight against Ivan in the second spot but fell 7-5, 6-3. Berkova breezed past Pangalos at fourth singles, 6-1, 6-0, while Sarah Monteagudo '16 almost took the opener from Kriz but fell, 7-6, 6-2.

Amherst next heads to Atlanta for a weekend of play against top D-III competition, beginning with Friday's 2 p.m. contest with host Emory.
