MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Taking two of three in doubles and the bottom three singles matches, the top-ranked Amherst College women's tennis team remained unbeaten against Division III opponents with a narrow 5-4 win over third-ranked Middlebury College in its regular season finale on Sunday.
While the Panthers won in the top three singles positions, Amherst clinched the match win with an impressive showing of depth as the Jeffs rolled to three straight-set wins at the bottom of the card. Running its win streak to 14 matches, Amherst improved to 16-1 overall and 8-0 in NESCAC play while dropping Middlebury to 10-5 (6-2 NESCAC).
The Jeffs jumped out to a fast start in doubles play as No. 3s Caroline Richman '13 and Safi Aly '15 cruised past Margot Marchese and Lauren Amos, 8-1, and Amherst's top duo of Jordan Brewer '14 and Gabby Devlin '14 were also easy winners, downing Brittney Faber and Leah Kepping, 8-3. The Panthers pulled out a point at second doubles, however, when Lok-Sze Leung and Ria Gerger outlasted Jen Newman '14 and Zoe Pangalos '14, 8-6.
Devlin notched the first singles win for Amherst at No. 5 as she made quick work of Dorrie Paradies, 6-0, 6-2. Pangalos was nearly as efficient in the six spot as she put away Faber, 6-1, 6-2, but the Panthers kept hope of a comeback alive when Kepping finished off Sue Ghosh '16, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3s to pull within 4-2. Moments later, Amherst clinched its triumph, however, as Richman completed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Marchese at fourth singles. Middlebury grabbed its final two points when Leung took down Brewer atop the order, 7-5, 6-3, and Gerger took the day's only three-setter in comeback fashion, outlasting Newman, 1-6, 6-3, 7-5.
With their lone regular season loss coming at Division II power Lynn University, the Jeffs will host next weekend's NESCAC Championship as they look to defend their 2012 crown.
