SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - The Amherst women's tennis team closed out its fall season with a stellar showing at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT). Dropping just two matches all weekend, Amherst's Jordan Brewer '14 and Sue Ghosh '16 took home the championship, defeating teammates Jen Newman '14 and Zoe Pangalos '14.
In the unique NEWITT format, three points are up for grabs in each round. After two teams compete in a pro-set doubles match, those players break up for a pair of singles matches. The team to earn at least two of the three points advances in the bracket.
Dropping their semifinals doubles match to Tufts' Sam Gann '14 and Sophie Schonfeld '15, 9-7, Brewer and Ghosh hoped to stay alive with a pair of singles wins. Brewer put the duo one step closer to a finals berth with a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Gann before Ghosh upended Schonfeld, 6-1, 6-3, to push the Jeffs through.
Facing Williams' Maria Pylypiv '15 and Riqui McCoy '16 in the semis, Newman and Pangalos took an early lead with a hard-fought 9-8 (3) doubles victory. Newman then clinched the win by taking down Pylypiv, 6-3, 6-0, before Pangalos wrapped up the sweep by securing a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over McCoy.
In the all-Amherst final, it was Brewer and Ghosh that prevailed, notching an 8-3 decision. The Jeff competitors did not play the singles matches as Brewer and Ghosh finished a combined 11-2. Newman and Pangalos posted a 9-1 mark during the weekend.
