Amherst Opens Fall Season With Loss to Williams

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst women's tennis team opened its 2011 fall schedule with a 6-3 loss to archrival Williams College Saturday evening. A rematch of last season's national championship, the Ephs took two of three doubles matches before securing wins in third through sixth singles to seal the victory.

Playing without usual partner Gabby Devlin '14 (McLean, Va.), Jordan Brewer '14 (Woodland Hills, Calif.) paired with Laura Danzig '12 (Allendale, N.Y.) to defeat Williams' Kara Shoemaker '14 and Nancy Worley '13 8-4 at first doubles.

Kathleen Elkins '14 and Caroline Capute '12 ousted Amherst's Zoe Pangalos '14 (New York, N.Y.) and Jen Newman '14 (Haverford, Pa.) 8-3 at second doubles, while Rebecca Curran '15 and Kristin Alotta '12 earned an identical 8-3 decision over Lauren Slutsky '14 (Palm City, Fla.) and Saafi Aly at third doubles.

Brewer headlined the Lord Jeffs' singles lineup with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Worley, while Danzig edged out Alotta 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 in the second spot. Shoemaker bested Pangalos 6-1, 6-1 in third singles, while Elkins rebounded from a 6-0 first-set loss to defeat Newman 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4. Curran earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Slutsky at fifth singles, while Capute earned a 6-1, 6-4 triumph in the sixth slot.

Amherst will next compete at the ITA Championships hosted by Bates College on Sept. 30-Oct. 2.
