Jeffs Punch Ticket to NCAA Quarterfinals

AMHERST, Mass. – With a 5-0 win over Skidmore College on Sunday, the third-ranked Amherst College women's tennis team has earned another trip to the NCAA Division III Championship quarterfinals.

The third-ranked Lord Jeffs (17-3) increased their win streak to nine matches, while the 17th-ranked Thoroughbreds (14-6) had their streak snapped at five. Skidmore defeated Amherst back in the 1998 national semifinals, but the Jeffs have ended the T-Breds' season four times since then.

The Lord Jeffs will take on sixth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University in the national quarterfinals on Monday, May 21, marking their fourth consecutive appearance in the quarterfinal round and their 17th in the past 18 years. The final three rounds of the tournament and the individual championships will take place at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.

Amherst won each of Sunday's doubles matches comfortably, beginning with Laura Danzig '12 and Gabby Devlin '14 defeating Lee Ford and Nataly Mendoza in the top flight, 8-4. Sophomores Jennifer Newman and Zoe Pangalos followed with an 8-3 victory against Melissa Hirsch and Tory Engros at number two, and Amherst's third pairing of Caroline Richman '13 and Safi Aly '15 moved to 11-0 by defeating Alex Smith and Robyn Baird, 8-3.

All six of Amherst's singles players got off to outstanding starts, but it was Pangalos who beat her teammates to the finish line with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ford in the fourth flight. Richman wrapped things up for the Lord Jeffs at number three, as she increased her win streak to seven by defeating Mendoza, 6-3, 6-1.

Danzig, Newman and Aly were each only a game away from clinching a win at numbers one, two and six, while Devlin took the first set from Smith and was trailing in the second, 4-5.

More information about the final rounds of the NCAA Championship will be made available later in the week. A complete tournament bracket is available here.
