WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – In a battle between the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked women's tennis teams in Division III, Amherst College fell just short of an upset and dropped to 4-2 on the season with a 5-4 loss to Williams College.

Sunday marked the first time the Ephs have successfully defended their home courts against Amherst since Oct. 10, 2003, as the Lord Jeffs had won the past nine meetings in Williamstown.

The match began outdoors with Amherst's top doubles team of Jordan Brewer '14 and Laura Danzig '12 breezing past Kara Shoemaker and Taylor French, 8-1. The Ephs tied things up at 1-1 when Kathleen Elkins and Kristin Alotta defeated Zoe Pangalos '14 and Jennifer Newman '14 at number two by a score of 8-5.

Rain forced the rest of the match indoors, and Amherst regained the lead when Gabby Devlin '14 and Caroline Richman '13 edged Caroline Capute and Rebecca Curran, 9-7, for a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play.

Danzig struck first with a three-set win over Shoemaker at number two, as she suffered a 6-3 loss in her first set before rallying to win the next two by scores of 6-2 and 6-3. The Jeffs seemed poised to take a commanding 4-1 lead when Brewer shut out Alotta in the first set at number one, but the Eph senior came back for a pair of 6-3 set victories.

Newman gave Amherst a 4-2 lead with a come-from-behind win over Nancy Worley in the third match, dropping her first set before taking the final two. Elkins followed by defeating Richman in three sets at number four, and Curran soon evened the team score at 4-4 with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Pangalos in the fifth spot.

With only Capute and Amherst first-year Safi Aly left on the court, the Lord Jeff rookie came through with a 6-4 win in her first set. Capute tied the match with a 6-3 result in the second set and completed the comeback by winning the third frame, 6-2.

The Lord Jeffs will return to action next weekend when they compete in the Wellesley Invitational.
