Jeffs Open Spring With 8-1 Win Over Vanguard

COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Amherst women's tennis team opened its 2012 spring season with decisive 8-1 victory over NAIA member Vanguard University.

Amherst's Jordan Brewer '14 (Woodland Hills, Calif.) and Laura Danzig '12 (Allendale, N.Y.) got the Lord Jeffs off to a fast start with an 8-4 victory over Gabriela Bergmanova '12 and Ekaterina Gabashvili '13 at first doubles, while Caroline Newman '13 (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) and Zoe Pangalos '14 (New York, N.Y.) earned an 8-2 win over Petronella Lindahl '15 and Ashley Tebeau '13 in the second slot.

Bergmanova notched the Lions' only point of the day with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) first singles victory over Brewer, while Danzig downed Gabashvili, 6-3, 6-3. Newman bested first-year Gabriele Alford, 6-1, 6-0 at third singles, while Richman upended Lindahl 6-0, 6-1 in the fourth spot.

Pangalos rounded out Amherst's strong showing with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Tebeau at fifth singles.

The Lord Jeffs return to action on Wednesday, Mar. 21 against Concordia.
