Amherst Blanks Geneseo in NCAA 2nd Round

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College women's tennis team began its run in the NCAA Division III Championship with a 5-0 win over SUNY Geneseo on Saturday.

Bumping its win streak to eight matches, Amherst (16-3) earned a spot in the national tournament's Round of 16 for the 18th consecutive year. The Lord Jeffs will host Skidmore College tomorrow at 9 a.m. with a trip to the NCAA quarterfinals on the line.

SUNY Geneseo ends its spring with a 14-4 record and will begin the 2012-13 season as defending champions of the SUNYAC.

Each of the three doubles matches finished with an 8-1 score in Amherst's favor, beginning with sophomores Zoe Pangalos and Jennifer Newman defeating Regina Connelly and Katie Gayvert in the second flight. Laura Danzig '12 and Gabby Devlin '14—the top-ranked pair in the Northeast—followed suit in the No. 1 matchup.

Caroline Richman '13 and Safi Aly '15 closed out the doubles session in the third flight, improving the Amherst pair to 10-0 on the year.

Newman picked up the first singles point for Amherst with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win at number two, improving her record to 16-2 as the 12th-ranked player in the region. Aly was just as impressive in the sixth flight, as she clinched the match by winning each of her sets by a 6-0 margin.

Tomorrow's showdown between third-ranked Amherst and 17th-ranked Skidmore will be a rematch of the Apr. 7 meeting in which the Lord Jeffs posted a 9-0 win over the Thoroughbreds at Wellesley's Nor'Easter Bowl. Amherst ended Skidmore's NCAA tournament runs in 2009, 2008 and 2000, while the T-Breds beat the Jeffs in the 1998 semifinals en route to the national title.

Sunday's regional final was originally scheduled to begin at noon in Amherst, but the match has been moved up to 9 a.m. due to the expectation of afternoon rain. For more information, visit the Amherst Regional Championship website.
