Amherst Earns 8-1 Win at #10 Bowdoin

WATERVILLE, Maine – The third-ranked Amherst College women's tennis team picked up its 10th victory of the season by posting an impressive 8-1 result at 10th-ranked Bowdoin College on Saturday.

The Lord Jeffs improved to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in the NESCAC, while the Polar Bears dropped to 7-6 (3-2 NESCAC).

Three of the six singles matches required three sets, each of which was won by Amherst. Laura Danzig '12 dropped her second set in a tiebreaker but would return the favor, edging Kellen Alberstone 7-6(6) in the final frame of the No. 1 matchup.

Zoe Pangalos '14 dropped her first set at number four, but she rallied to win the second (6-2) and third (10-4) against Emma Lewis. Kimberly Snyder '12 had a similar result at number six, as she fell into a 1-0 hole before winning her second (6-4) and third (6-2) sets.

Caroline Richman '13 and Safi Aly '15 won their matches in straight sets at three and five, respectively, with Bowdoin's Kate Winningham picking up her team's lone point with a 6-4, 6-2 win in the No. 2 match.

Amherst put in a strong performance in doubles play, beginning with Danzig and Gabby Devlin '14 cruising past Alberstone and Winningham at number one, 8-2. Pangalos and Jennifer Newman '14 earned an 8-4 win in the second matchup, with Richman and Aly completing the sweep at number three (8-5).

The Lord Jeffs will close out their regular season by hosting three NESCAC teams this week, beginning with a rematch against 13th-ranked Tufts on Wednesday, Apr. 25. The Jeffs defeated the Jumbos by a score of 8-1 earlier this month at Wellesley College's Nor'Easter Bowl.
